Curriculum Vitae
Biografía

I am a scientific researcher at the Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography (IEGD) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). I obtained my PhD in Sociology at the University of Oxford (Nuffield College, UK) and the Juan March Institute (Madrid, Spain).

My research focuses on the social determinants of child development. In my projects I have studied how perinatal health, educational attainment, health and socio-emotional well-being are affected by family migration, discrimination and racism, child poverty, changes in family structure and, more recently, climate change and armed conflicts.

In addition, I am interested in the development and application of quantitative research techniques and their methodological implications in data analysis in multiple other fields.

I have been a full professor of sociology at the UNED and a visiting professor at the University of Bielefeld, the Autonomous University and Carlos III of Madrid, and the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona. Between 2019 and 2023, I held the position of General Director of Innovation and Social Strategy at the Madrid City Council.

Current Research Projects:

  • EqualStrength – A Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union. This research project examines cumulative and structural forms of discrimination, prejudice against outgroups, and hate crimes targeting ethnic, racial, and religious minorities. EqualStrength is led by a consortium of ten European research institutions. https://equalstrength.eu/

  • MIX-EDUC-MIG: Migration and/or Education? A Century of Life Course Strategies in Spain (1923-2026) – Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, this project explores the causes and consequences of different combinations of education and migration-related actions that individuals undertake to improve their life opportunities.

Previous Research Projects:

I have participated in several European projects (Families and Societies, TEMPER), ESRC-funded projects (Bright Futures, Asian Mobilities), and multiple other projects funded under the Spanish National Research Plan.
