Research Group on Demographic Dynamics

Researcher in charge: Diego Ramiro Fariñas

The activity of the Research Group on Demographic Dynamics began in 2002. On one hand, it is oriented towards basic research in the field of demography, especially in the areas of: fertility, nuptiality, migration and health-mortality, and, on the other hand, towards the realisation of applied demography studies, from a multidisciplinary perspective that includes: economics, sociology, public health, geography, statistics, history... The dissemination of the results from researches and studies is also an important task of the Group. The Group, given its high level of activity, despite having a small number of staff researchers, has obtained funding and resources to maintain more than 40 people hired since its beginning, either through research projects or through various scholarships and contracts for staff training."
The research undertaken by the group covers a wide range of population issues, including:

- family dynamics
- migration and migrants
- health and mortality
- ageing and living conditions
- historical demography

Our research places special emphasis on the interplay of various life-course transitions and on the social context of demographic processes. We are particularly interested in the influence of gender relationships and social policy on demographic behavior, and on the impact of population trends on economic and social well-being. Most of our work has a comparative perspective, and it mainly focuses on Europe and Latin America.
